Exercise - Mindfulness with an external focus

Length:
5 minutes

Hold in your hand an object from nature like a leaf, a flower or an apple. In this description we will assume it's a flower.

No other flower is precisely like this one - it is unique. Give it your full attention for five minutes so you could pick this flower out from a hundred different flowers of this type. Notice the colours, look at the individual petals. Does each petal have a unique shape and size? What about smell, texture and patterns?

The joy of really attending to this flower lies in your open gaze at its uniqueness.

You can also try sprinkling your attention like this a few times throughout your day - at what you see from your window, or the people or pets around you.
