Exercise - Dropping inessential work

Length:
30 minutes

Working out what to do about the tasks and activities that don't make the cut when you prioritise is often the hardest part. In particular, other teams may now not get the service they have come to expect from you. This will require careful handling. Ideally you will have been communicating with colleagues outside your team while you are going through the priority setting process.

  1. Make a list of tasks and activities that you have decided NOT to focus on that could have a significant impact on others.
  2. Think through how you can communicate this to the affected parties eg in terms of you needing to prioritise because of limited resources.
  3. Think about how you might advise or help the affected parties to find alternative solutions. Can you offer them a transition period while they find an alternative?
  4. Communication is essential, especially in difficult circumstances like these. Do you have a plan for this?
